LOOK MOM I SHAVED MY HEAD

What Would You Do If You Lost 100 Pounds?

By: Cathy Droz and Melanie Shawcroft  - Boomer and X

If I lost 100 pounds I would have gotten a full-on makeover; including false eyelashes, new hairstyle and color, red lipstick, tight dress and high heels. I would have gone out with a bunch of girlfriends and flirted with every man that looked my way. Not my daughter, she lost 100 pounds and chose to shave her head, the part of her she was most proud of, the part of her that she could control. Just when I blamed myself for the 100 pounds she had to shed, thinking I raised her to love food more than herself, I realized I raised a very determined woman who makes a promise and owns it. A woman who takes charge, sticks to her word and inspires others. A woman who looks fantastic bald and is happy inside and out. I don’t think I could have done what she did. I am very proud of my daughter Melanie… I hope she inspires you.

As a former athlete, I spent hours every day working out my body. However, my dependent relationship with fast food and ability to lie on the couch for hours watching television definitely caught up with me once my days on the field dwindled. I have struggled with my weight for the past 15 years.
In January, I decided to make a change for myself, my husband of six years and my two-year-old son, with hopes of adding another to our family in the near future. Don’t get me wrong – this is not my first attempt at losing the weight. I have done fad diets, taken many pills, tried expensive, trendy workouts – resulting in fluctuating weight between 145 pounds and tipping the scale at nearly 300 pounds.

This time has been different – I vowed to do it the healthy way. I have been eating lean proteins, vegetables and fruits and much smaller portions. If I do splurge at the table, I do it in moderation and burn it off in the gym. I hit the pavement to workout – run, walk, stairs. I take advantage of the free gym and workout classes at my job, and I sometimes splurge on a zumba class at the local rec center. I try to participate in at least 30 minutes of exercise 4-6 days a week.

For me, it is about losing the weight and keeping it off. It is about changing my lifestyle, not changing my dress size for one special occasion. I have lost 100 pounds which is more than the original goal I set for myself. I feel like the athlete I once was but with an added appreciation for healthy eating and an active standard of living.
In my 15-year struggle with my weight, there was one constant I could always control – the only physical feature I felt was beautiful: my hair. In celebration of losing 100 pounds, I decided to do something I thought I would only talk about but never actually follow through with. I shaved my head. It may sound foolish to some, but to me, it means finally gaining control of my health and no longer needing the hair. There is much more that I see as beautiful about myself – my dedication, hard work and will to fight for my life for myself, my husband, my son and my family and friends. That is so much greater than hair.

Camp Grandma Goes to "Butterfly Wonderland"

CAMP GRANDMA AND Monarchs

By Cathy Droz and Cathy Burford

August 2013

It is nearly impossible not to smile when a butterfly enters your vision. Now imagine thousands of them, and Phoenix is probably the last place you would expect to witness that, especially in a rainforest environment. Since opening in May of this year, Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale boasts the largest butterfly atrium in America! Due to its lush, tropical environment, it is also most likely the only butterfly atrium where you feel like you have had a moisturizing facial along with your visit…
Far more than just a facility where butterflies rule, you will find several other live exhibits to fascinate your grandchildren and yourselves.

To get in the spirit of things, begin in their fabulous 3-D theater to watch the ‘Flight of the Butterflies’. This movie chronicles the amazing journey of the Monarch Butterfly. Your little ones will thrill at the butterflies soaring within their grasp. Next you will enter the Emergence Gallery where you will witness various species of butterflies emerging from their chrysalises, their metamorphosis complete.

Our grandkids were really fascinated with the Live Aunt Colony and the Honey Bee Extravaganza. Watching those industrious creatures made us adults feel rather lazy in comparison! The Rivers of the Amazon exhibit showcases freshwater aquatic life up close, and even includes a baby stingray petting pool.

Above all is the Butterfly Conservatory, the magical centerpiece of this extraordinary facility! By all means, bring your camera to this lush atrium that is adorned with tropical plants, waterfalls, koi pond, and thousands of butterflies that travelled here as chrysalises from as far away as Thailand! An equatorial climate awaits; a feast for the senses! Be sure to school your grandchildren beforehand regarding the basic rules; no touching the butterflies, watch where you step, and enjoy it when they choose you as a landing spot! It is easy to lose track of time while watching these beautiful creatures.

HAVE YOU DRIVEN A FORD LATELY?

HAVE YOU FALLEN IN LOVE WITH A FORD LATELY/

2013 Ford Escape Titanium

By: Cathy Droz

I Have! I own a 2002 Ford Thunderbird convertible and my latest test drive vehicle was the new 2013 Ford Escape Titanium model. This redesigned, 4-wheel-drive, five seat crossover has a turbocharged 2.0 liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine which satisfied the speed in my blood and the practicality in my DNA.

The Ford escape is exactly that, an escape into the future; which includes a remote start capability, which enables one to heat or cool their seat before getting in the vehicle, and a slick parking technology package.

The optional parking technology package will cost an additional $995, but who wouldn’t want to have someone else parallel park for you? With the active park assist you can saunter along looking for a parallel parking space and the Escape’s sensors will detect a spot that will fit this five-seat SUV. This is a much better scenario than my husband yelling, “look there’s another spot you drove by.” So, ignoring him completely, the chime alerted me to an empty spot, whereby I lined the Escape up and then let go of the steering wheel (difficult for control freaks). I used the accelerator and brake and put the Escape into Drive and Reverse as necessary. The system safely steered the Escape into the parking spot. I have to admit, I did it more than once, as the first time didn’t look very respectable or safe.

The exterior of the new Ford Escape has more curves on this year’s model; less of a boxy look. As a result, the front end is more aerodynamic, allowing for better fuel economy. So not only is the new body style more functional, but the new curvatures and creases give the Escape a more European look. Maybe that is what I have at my age, a more European look?
My favorite feature is also something the folks at Ford are very proud of, and that is the power liftgate. Don’t confuse the “Ford power liftgate” with the ones you can control from your fob or push a button inside the cargo area to close.

The 2013 Escape has a sensor under the rear bumper, so when you kick your foot under it, the liftgate opens. That means if your arms are full with groceries, babies, sports equipment, lumber or Tiffany jewelry for me, you have no reason to drop what you have in your hands.
Now let’s venture inside the Ford Escape. As I look at all the gadgets, including the MyFord Touch, I feel I need to take a breath and not leave the driveway until I understand all the great features. The Sync system has voice-control functions for the stereo, text-to-voice for some cellphones, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Sync support was a big help for me to understand the Sync system. The Escape has a 12-volt outlet as well as an aux jack and a USB input.

Now that I am settled in, I checked with my passengers. My 30-something daughter Julia had plenty of legroom and enjoyed the second row’s reclining seatback. The child safety seat was easy to install and had two sets of lower Latch anchors. The Escape Titanium has the electronic stability system with anti-roll control, traction control and seven airbags, including side curtains for both rows. It wins all kinds of safety awards and I can see why.
The 2013 Ford Escape base model starts at $23,365, with the top of the line Titanium, which I drove, starting at $35,130. I enjoyed the drive, the parallel-park feature and power liftgate, but I’m still waiting for the Tiffany jewelry.
If you haven’t driven a Ford lately, the 2013 Ford Escape is the one to try.

Why Silent Witness is "Amazing"

Silent Witness aims to provide closure

Rachel Glass' voice still breaks with emotion as she talks about her daughter, who was murdered two years ago.

"She was awesome," Glass said. "She was really a lovely girl. She truly was the kind of person that when she walked into a room, lit up the room."

Nicole Glass and her roommate, Melissa Mason, were found dead in their locked home near 44th Street and Thomas Road on Dec. 3, 2010. Mason was eight weeks pregnant at the time of her death.

The women, both 27, were found strangled, Phoenix police said.

Two years later and after exhausting all viable leads, the police and family turned to Silent Witness for help.

Shortly after the murders, the Glass family and their friends handed out fliers at supermarkets near the home and went around the neighborhood in search of people who might have information.

"We don't have anything," Glass said. "That is why Silent Witness is so important."

Silent Witness, a non-profit organization, partners with Valley law-enforcement agencies to help solve felonies by using anonymous tips from the public. A 25-member civilian board of directors oversees the program and approves the amount of payout for each viable tip.

"About 200 worst-of-the-worst violent felony arrests (each year) are based on Silent Witness," said Phoenix Sgt. Darren Burch, program coordinator. "We're talking homicides, sexual assaults, armed robberies, kidnappings."

Burch said the program was instrumental in a number of high-profile investigations, including those of "Serial Shooters" Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman; "Baseline Killer" Mark Goudeau; and Jhessye Shockley, a 5-year-old missing Glendale girl who police believe was killed by her mother.

How the program works is simple.

Program staff provide information on unsolved felony cases to the media and billboard companies, which help publicize the information.

Glass and Burch already have made their rounds to local media outlets, and a sign company is posting the case information on billboards through December.

The public calls in or e-mails a tip, which the group routes to the respective police agency and case agent.

The tipster, who remains anonymous, could receive up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest or indictment in a case. The public and family can kick in additional reward money.

The Glass family, through such fundraising events as car washes and donations, has increased the reward to $10,000 for a tip leading to an arrest in their case.

The staff, which includes Burch, two Phoenix detectives, one Mesa detective and a civilian, answers the phones, sorts through the incoming tips and does basic research if the information is too vague before passing it off to the proper jurisdiction.

The program on average receives 1,500 tips a month, Burch said.

"Out of 1,500 tips each month, we can range from 10 to 28 arrests," he said.

The program's staff is half of what it was five years ago because of budget constraints.

Rollie Trayte, who has more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and retail security, has served on the board since 1998.

Trayte said one of his tasks is to find people and companies willing to support the program financially.

"It's easy to garner support for the cause because we have great results," said Trayte, who was a past board president. "It sure as heck feels great when we get the bad guys off the streets."

Joining the board was a natural given Trayte's background.

"It's emotional," he said of the cases over the years. "There have been a couple of cases that have dogged us."

One case that stands out for Trayte involves an older Glendale couple who were driving home when shots were fired into their pickup truck. The husband was killed.

"It's been hanging out there for probably close to 10 years," he said.

Silent Witness

The Phoenix Police Department established Silent Witness more than 30 years ago following a string of violent business robberies, said Sgt. Darren Burch, who heads the program. The program is under the umbrella of Crime Stoppers, which began in Albuquerque in 1976 and is now international.

The program has since been embraced by law enforcement Valley-wide. Luke Air Force Base is the latest entity to partner with Silent Witness, Burch said.

A 25-member civilian board oversees the non-profit program funded entirely by donations and grants. The program hosts fundraisers, including an annual golf tournament and crime bracelets to generate the reward money.

The program takes anonymous calls from the public on felony cases. Tipsters remain anonymous and are given a secret number when they call.

A tipster uses the secret number to check if the tip resulted in an arrest. If an arrest occurred, the tipster is directed to a partnering bank where the secret number is given to a teller who hands over the reward money in cash.

Call 480-WITNESS, 800-343-TIPS or go to silentwitness.org.

I'm Dreaming of a Lexus 600 h L

2013 Lexus 600 h L

KFYI Car Pro with Jerry Reynolds

Saturday 11 AM to 2 PM

By: Cathy Droz

My dream car..I can’t decide if I want to drive it or be driven. Hi this is
Cathy Droz with Car Pro and I am dreaming about the 2013 Lexus 600 h
L. The h stands for hybrid and the L for Long base and Luxury. This
executive transport LS may not be for everyone at $119,000 but driving
it and experiencing the backseat was more fun than my first kiss. The
new spool grill of Lexus graced the front and under the hood the V-8
engine and hybrid technology gave me the best of both worlds. I rode
in the backseat and never wanted to leave with a 9-inch blu Ray screen
that motored down from the ceiling, wood table that popped up from
the floor and the rear seat ottoman lifting my legs to a man cave
comfort. The console between the seats provided a frig, there were
three airbags per passenger including knees and Shiatsu Style massage
pulsating through my reclining chair. Dream car yes… next wish… a
chauffeur. Till next time, this is Cathy Droz with CarPro for more

Cathy's Car Corner - You Need a SOUL !!!

Two for the Road USA

Auto Review – KFYI Clear Channel Radio – Saturday’s 11 AM to 2 PM
CarPro with Jerry Reynolds
By: Cathy Droz

It’s good to have a big heart.. but there is nothing like having a soul… Kia SOUL that is. Hi this is Cathy
Droz with Car Pro. I just test drove the 2013 KIA soul wagon last week and loved the way it handled
both highway and the curvy backstreets. The SOUL is funky and hip and with a hatchback as
door number five, it can transport more than you think. The functional Soul has a base
price of $14,400 and you get plenty for your dollar. 1.6 liter 4 cyl engine, automatic transmission,
Bluetooth, IPOD input, satellite radio, front and side airbags, stability control and ABS brakes.
OH ! and a 5- year 60,000 mile warranty. My favorite? Hill Start Assist control.. not that living in the
desert has a lot of hills, but getting to the polls last week to vote had its ups and downs, So come on …
the hamster commercials alone make you want to test drive the Soul.. have a heart… own a Soul.

Cathy's Car Corner Praises Hyundai Sonata

As Heard on KFYI – Clear Channel Radio – Saturday’s 11 AM to 2 PM
CarPro with Jerry Reynolds By: Cathy Droz

My son Jason wants to lease a 2013 Hyundai, Sonata. I know it’s a good car but why the Sonata? Hi, this is Cathy Droz with CarPro and as my son said.. it’s a luxurious looking sedan, spacious both inside and out and the prices start at $20,000. This suburb daddy, with three small children put the Sonata to the test at the dealership by placing all three of the kids car seats in the back and then threw his golf clubs, grass seed bags and other props he brought into the trunk .. the five–seater passenger car with two moon roofs, 60,000 mile warranty and 35 miles to the gallon highway, passed the test.

For me…I like looking at rears .. and I think Sonata has one of the best ! For 2013 Sonata has a hybrid
and turbo version but the entry level was all my son needed. It may be good for a family of five but as
an empty nester I loved how quiet it was just driving all by myself to the Suns game.

Phoenix Victims Revered with V.O.C. Bracelets
Silent Witness Introduces Victims of Crime Bracelet at Annual Golf Tournament

September 19, 2011 (Phoenix, AZ) – The non-profit crime fighting organization Silent Witness launches Victims Of Crime Bracelets on September 26, 2011 at the Silent Witness Annual CATCH A CROOK Golf Tournament. The V.O.C. Bracelets are a public awareness and memorial announcement to four Arizonan’s that lost their life during the commission of a felony. Each V.O.C. Bracelet has the name of one of the four victims and the Silent Witness contact information etched into it as a virtual vigil and keepsake of the victim and the assistance available from Silent Witness.

Each bracelet is sold for $25.00 and all proceeds go to the general fund of Silent Witness

Kyleigh Sousa – 21 year old female ASU student murdered in June 2010, case solved.
Lynsey Chainhalt - 20 year old female murdered June 2003 remains unsolved.
"Path" Van Leeuwen – 78 year old woman died June 2008 remains unsolved.
Edward Forst – murdered June 2007 on West McDowell Rd., remains unsolved.

During the 1970's people wore POW bracelets in an active support of the military during the war. Supporters wore them 24hrs a day in hopes that their person would be returned to freedom safely. Silent Witness Board member Cathy Droz was inspired by the eternal vigil the bracelets represented in the ‘70s and recreated the sentiment with V.O.C. Bracelets. “I remember wearing that bracelet everyday to remind me of the families who had a loved one missing. My soldier became a part of my family and prayers,” Droz said.

The V.O.C. Bracelets are available online at www.silentwitness.org effective Monday September 26, 2011 in conjunction with the annual fundraiser. For more information on the golf tournament or other ways to help Silent Witness, go to www.silentwitness.org.

Grand Opening of City Central Coffee

Two for the Road USA has a second office downtown Phoenix.  With the opening of City Central Coffee there is a table just for our meetings and greeting new friends.  The coffee house is at Washington and Central and serves the best coffee in the area.  Local first is their motto and how they got started is very interesting.
Bill and I were there for the ribbon cutting and try and stop in once a week.
